Dalton Paula (Brasília, 1982) works in painting, drawing, video, performance, and objects that refer to many Afro-Brazilian histories and experiences. Brazilian Portraits accompanies the artist's solo exhibition at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP), and focuses on a central part of the artist's production: the portraits. Paula researches Black characters in Brazilian histories that do not have visual representation, precisely with the aim of giving them a face. This book, the first fully dedicated to the artist, reproduces 58 portraits accompanied by biographical notes on the characters. This is an essential volume for those wishing to understand both Afro-Brazilian history and contemporary art production.
