Teone Taare Tikao was one of the most respected rangatira of the South Island. Trained as a boy in the ways of the tohunga, he was acknowledged to have a vast knowledge of Maori mythology, history and culture. In 1920 Tikao's great knowledge was tapped by the historian Herries Beattie.
