A movie fan in a remote farmland strikes a relationship with a homeless female vagabond. China, remote countryside, Cultural Revolution: an escaped convict from a labour camp is trying to see a newsreel in which his estranged daughter appears. After locating the village where the newsreel is to be shown, it is stolen by a local girl who needs the celluloid to save her little brother.
