It is a place of sorrow and sadness, violence and death, with a massacre of 70 men, women and children in 1826. The author grew up in Rapaki, was introduced to Ripapa by way of the very occasional Rapaki community launch trip to the motu. And a growing awareness of the history of Ripapa began when he was asked to respond on behalf of Rapaki to the Department of Conservation's draft Ripapa Island Interpretation Strategy in March 2001. This book is sort of a guidance on the history of Ripapa from a manawhenua perspective.
