He joined up when he was only seventeen, and now, with little time left, is reliving the years in the trenches in Flanders. Many thoughts and people come to him in his mind - he remembers the camaraderie, the friends, the bravery, the stink, the endless hardships and above all his incredible success at being a sniper. He comes from an impoverished background where his father drank and abused the children. This has given him a shrewdness and an ability to survive. But there is also the motivation to prove himself and be recognised for his skills. Through kaleidoscopic vignettes, we are able to be there with Jacko and experience the horrors, the injustices, and the futility of war.
