In 1946 former U.S. first lady Eleanor Roosevelt was elected chair of the United Nations (UN) Commission on Human Rights. She was instrumental in preparing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which aimed to promote human rights as "the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world". The declaration was adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 1948.
